I hate how the only thing most western commentators care about is freedom and democracy... and no matter how well a president does he still sucks if he does not work in the western standards.. I think what is really urgent is economic and social freedoms, and I support a president who acknowledges those and work on them even if he's president for life... because it is a reality that the vast majority of people on this earth only want to have peace and a better and prosperous life first and foremost.. political freedom would be nice, but not nearly as important at the moment.. give me the freedom to be individualistic and to hope for my own future and I'm good. Ask westerners what they're doing with their political freedom and you'll realize it does not make a difference to 90% of them..
in short, I think Bashar is doing good... I have not been to Syria in a long time though..

I think the fact that he is getting buy can be considered success to a certain point, because, as the article highlights, he was going under lots of pressure; and this time this pressure included our Arab neighbors. He survived without changing his policies so that can be considered success. It also seems like his policies in recent years have earned the approval of people in the region (except those who blindly follow what their governments say, like our Saudi or Lebanese friends), making those policies natural and responsive to the realities of the region. He managed to strike a balance between blindly following the west, and stubbornly opposing it. the economic situation is changing to the better (or so it seems). Of course there may be some negative side effects (like greater separation between the wealthy and the poor), but those are inherent in any change. you cant fix everything in one night, or 9 years..
