The Syrian Association in Queensland (Rabitet Almogterbeen) continues its activities all around the place. Recently we had the opportunity to display Syrian culture and its comparison to the life style of young children at Australian Government’s schools. Last week (8 Aug) in a visit to a Queensland primary state school we managed to give Year 2 children (7 yrs olds) information about Syria, its geography, traditional costumes, currency, ethnic foods and the activities of school in Syria including school uniforms, school times and days, and children’s sports (football) etc.
Australian children were able to put together the pieces of a giant puzzle making a huge Syrian Map. Letters and numbers used in Syria were explored and the children enjoyed learning an Arabic nursery rhyme ( Hal Sesan sho helween).
What a delicious minted yoghurt they made and had for breakfast with flat bread. They also made some hommus. One of the children’s favourite activities was the Syrian Umayyad geometric art.
Their faces beamed when they heard funny Juha stories and we ended a wonderful day by learning and dancing the Dabka.

Not much happening in the next few weeks as a number of our Syrian association’s members are busy, travel to Syria, relative sick or other end of the year affairs.
Our last activity were related to the Australian pioneer big school, were two Australian girls with beautiful turban and coloured Syrian sherwal (cloth) performed Juha the Syrian Play. 24 Australian Children from year 2 in age of 6 and 7 made wonderful Dabka dance with little practice. And on the stage trough big TV screen was presentation about Syria and culture etc. in front of around 350 Australian families majorities do not know were Syria is and went home to their computer to find out more about Syria.
Australian children were able to learn and sing children song ( Hal seasan, Little chicken).
It does look like our Syrian annual party may be cancel or adjourned to later date.

Syrian TV
As an active Syrian community living in Queensland state, Australia, one of our associates had the opportunity to appear on the Syrian TV twice in the middle of October 2007, to present a brief presentation on our activities in Australia.
We are proud of our motherland Syria and will continue our goal in being part of the Syrian culture expanding east the Globe ( Brisbane, Queensland, Australia).

Queen Of Syria
The reason for me posting here is to highlight our Syrian community’s activities in the state of Queensland, Australia.
Our Syrian community is alive and in love with our motherland Syria.
Few weeks ago we had a Syrian photo display at a state library in Brisbane, the subject was the Syrian modern history (I suppose the word Syria started after war world one 1916).
During this display I knew for the first time that there was the one and only Syrian Queen, Queen Azima the wife of King Faisal I.
Best wishes to all Syrians around the world hoping they do have similar activities in the place they reside.

gosh!.... this is the first time I see this topic!!
its quite impressive for me to see that we do have "syrian community" activities happening in ozi.... thats amazing really!!
Ive been in this country...mostly inTazi.... for quite a while now.... and I haven't seen any syrian around.... not even a single one.... and only few lebanese ppl.... and a couple of egyptians who came from newzealand
anyways.... I didn't do much effort really to look for any syrian community gathering or anything..... however I searched tazi upside down looking for any syrian restaurant but it seems that we don't have any! in Perth as well it seems like there is no syrian food at all!!
but thats good.... Ive been telling ppl here that there is a big syrian community in australia... but no one seems to know about that!.... so I was telling the truth hehe

Dear LostParadise and Syrians everywhere,
Our Syrian community is a small one in the Queensland state; otherwise our Syrian Association is rather active.
In Brisbane City we are between 1000- 1500 Syrians with a few hundred spread in the rest of the state.
We hear that the largest Syrian community is in Melbourne with more than 20 000 Syrians followed by Sydney.
Here in Brisbane we can get most of our Syrian food easily, we can buy Mn’usha Zater hommus and baba ganogh ( moutabl) but I miss Feta hommus, so I make it at home.
Plenty of Lebanese and Turkish restaurants offer similar Syrian dishes.
There are many Syrians who own take away shops, I know at least ten of them but they sell Australian food.
Long time since I last posted here, during this time our Syrians association has had a few activities.
At Brisbane Festival in the last week of July we joined in two displays, one for Calligraphy and the other for the Syrian Ancient (Ogariet Alphabet).
Soccer is still on with two groups every Friday and Tuesday.
The Syrian House is on the first Sunday of the month.
There is a festival coming in October but I did not get enough details about it yet and our Syrian annual party is on Saturday 22 of November with a singer and a band coming from Sydney.

No no, our 2008 Syrian Annual Party was actually last Saturday on 29th of November; the date was changed due to the Syrian Ambassador’s busy agenda and the hall availability.
A few hundred Syrians and other Arab brothers and sisters were there.
There was the usual entertainment with belly dancer, singer and band from Sydney with an accompanying dinner (‘Really’ large variety of food and desserts).
The next day, with the attendance of the Syrian Ambassador, the Syrian Arab Association of Queensland (Rabetat Al mogtarebeeen) held their committee elections. The existing 7 members were re-elected for the next two years (they must be very good).
The well-educated, knowledgeable Ambassador gave his speech regarding close ties between the embassy and the Syrian people living in Australia and New Zealand, and additionally discussed the embassy’s political social and media activities etc.

There was talk among a few Syrians as to whether we were active enough, we, the Syrian Association committee members in the state of Queensland. (رابطة المغتربين السورين (ولاية كوينزلاند )
As I started writing here about some of our activities, I found myself in a situation where I have to record more details about our previous activities on this website.
Why this website? The website has the word souria, has been around for long time, has easy access, contains a wide range of healthy contributions, is closer to Syrian social life and so on. I have not found a more appropriate site.
Forgive the repetition of old events, but it may help spark new ideas in fellow Syrians living abroad.
The ‘Marhaba’ celebration was one major event held last year over one month in the middle of biggest shopping centre in the state of Queensland (Garden City), with Brisbane City Council and Lord Mayor organizers. Syria and Saudi were the major contributors followed by Egypt, Emirates, Lebanon, Oman, Palestinian and Kuwait.
We had five workshops, the busiest was the Syrian cooking demonstration, followed by making ancient alphabet jewellery (Ugaret) then calligraphy, leadlight using plaster and a demonstration of how to make and decorate vases
We presented a lecture about Umayyad Architecture and there was Syrian Oud player and a theatre play of ‘Juha the Syrian’. There was low interest with our backgammon competition (Tawleat Zaher) as there was belly dancer and other Syrian Dabka dance at the same time.
Most of the event’s walls were covered with information about Syria. Photos, coins, stamps, decoration and art were on display. There was even a caricature exhibition led by Mr Raed Khalel that represented some Syrian cartoonists. Further, there was a display of our unique Syrian items, craft and cloth.
Unexpectedly, the city council was generous and we individually got good $$$ for our workshops, theatre, lectures and performances.

I would like to give everybody an idea about an active group in Australia before I write my comment.
Here is a copy from the website of the Syrian Embassy in Australia.
The “Friends of Syria” Group in Australia was formed in 2004, the same year of establishing the Syrian Embassy in Canberra. It comprises mainly former Australian ambassadors and diplomats who served in Syria, archaeologists who participated in excavation works in Syria, academics, journalists, authors and Members of the Australian Parliament. With more than 400 members, the Group was able to make significant achievements for the bilateral relations between Syria and Australia. The Group is non-political and aims at bringing together the cultural interests to meet in an informal forum at the Syrian Embassy. The Syrian Embassy in Canberra holds regular functions for the “Friends of Syria” Group with the active participation of Australian friends who visited, studied, worked in or have special passion towards Syria.
The Australian tourism to Syria is growing extensively, at a time that Syria is undertaking a very serious effort led by H. E. Mr. Bashar Al-Assad, President of the Syrian Arab Republic, towards modernising the country and providing the best services to tourists to see the ancient civilisations live in front of the eyes of visitors. Together with the Australian Syrian Parliamentary Friendship Committee in the Australian Parliament, the “Friends of Syria” Group is playing a constructive role in the Australian Syrian Friendship towards better relations between the two countries.

2-Friends of Syria
In the past for myself and for many Syrians still today, the Syrian Association (رابطة المغتربين السورين ) has been considered to be some how connected or some sort of extension of the Syrian Embassy’s administration circle. Many believe the embassy has authority over the election of members of the association’s committee and that committee members are bound by the embassy’s orders etc.
Being a committee member for more than four years, I have found that this is not the case.
During this time I found we were elected freely with no influence from the embassy; we were registered under Australian law as an Australian organization; and the association did actually have its own agenda which was not fully dependent on the embassy. This gave the association a certain amount of autonomy that sometimes left us a little out-of-touch with some matters.
One such example of this situation is the association’s approach to the group, “Friends of Syria”. For years the association did not have anything to do with the group, despite there being successful individual efforts from our community. Basically we had a lack of information about FOS and we felt it was one of the embassy’s activities. Additionally, most of the group’s activities were physically held at the embassy in Canberra, around 1300 km away from Brisbane which highlighted another slight challenge for anyone wanting to join the group so far away.
Gradually, we started to become aware of the importance of such a group for Syria and for Syrians living in and out of Queensland. We hope this ingenious idea of Mr Ambassador could spread to the rest of our embassies in the rest of the world. First however, on behalf of the Syrian Association, I would like to give my apologies to our ambassador and to our Syrian people for our lack of interest in a useful group such as the Friends of Syria.
Hence, we are going to make a big effort in the near future to promote Friends of Syria.
