Re: 3- Friends of Syria

                                                             3- Friends of Syria

As we have a limited number of community members (i.e. the Syrian association ( رابطة المغتربين السورين)  represents more or less than a thousand Syrian Queenslanders with Queensland’s population being around 5 million) and because we have several Australian friends, many of whom have an interest in Syria, we have identified the need to enlarge our activities and presence with the idea of establishing a new group to work within or together with the Syrian Association called the  "Queensland Friends of Syria" (QFOS).

The association is inviting Australians who have ties or think highly of Syria to meet at a place we fondly call Syrian House (Marymac Hall, 616 Ipswich Road, Moorooka) on Sunday 8 February 2009 at 1 pm to discuss founding the Queensland Friends of Syria group, setting up the committee’s members and goals, and preparing for the official launching of the group to be held on Sunday 5 April 2009 at the same time and place.

A suggestion has been made that the official launching day be in the form of a Syrian High Tea Party and invitations will be sent to politicians and embassy officials.

2-Syrian High Tea

Before I write about Syrian high tea let us read about

English High Tea

Whether savoring a serving of tea at high tea or afternoon tea, English tea can be an incredibly delightful addition to the party or on some occasions even the party itself.  Some people may believe that these two occasions are one and the same, but in fact, high tea and afternoon tea ceremonies are most definitely not the same thing and stem from completely different origins.

The differences between each type of traditional English tea ceremony are thoroughly outlined and discussed in regards to their origin, traditions, typical time of occasion and original purposes.

Afternoon Tea

The whole tradition of the English tea ceremony stems back to nineteenth century England and was started by the Duchess of Bedford. These occasions were the first types of traditional afternoon English tea ceremonies that actually began as an in-between occasion when lunch had passed but dinner still seemed a long way off, and there was a need for something in between.

The array of tea was usually served with a miniature meal of breads and butter, and if not for this afternoon meal, the Duchess and her high society lady friends (remember syrian and arabic history and the political saloons 80 years ago)  would have had to wait until well after dark for their next meal and this little feast filled that hungry space in between.

Since then and now to this day, the afternoon English tea ceremony has truly progressed to include many more foods such as scones and other pastries, but the timing of the occasion has steadfastly remained much the same.

High Tea

The occasion of high tea is often referred to as the same event as the afternoon English tea ceremony, however they are quite different indeed. Perhaps high tea sounds more proper, but this traditional English tea ceremony is actually the one that was practiced and was originated by the common folk in nineteenth century England.

Afternoon tea was already in full swing, but other people also needed a tradition to surround their tea time. Instead of an earlier scheduled tea time, however, their tea time was scheduled to occur closer to dinner or even in place of dinner. Such was the actual origin of the ceremony, in fact.

This English tea tradition was partially established in order to take the place of the boring and usual meal with an occasion of celebration and enjoyment of tea, this occasion took place around dusk and included much more filling foods like meat, eggs, cheese and the like. Also, both sexes were included in this meal, unlike the afternoon tea ceremony.

Tips and Ideas on how to attend an english style tea party with style and elegance

Good Manners when Holding a Teacup at High Tea

·                It is rude to loop fingers through the handle or to hold the body of the cup with the palm of the hand.

·               Tea should always be sipped sweetly with elegance to show good manners.

Tips for Tea Time Etiquette, Manners and a Making a Good Cup of Tea

·          It is considered rude to stir one's tea in wide circular motions. Proper etiquette requires the teaspoon to be held at the six o'clock position to begin. Then, any added liquid is folded lightly towards the twelve o'clock position two or three times.

·          The teaspoon should never be left in the teacup. When not in use, the small teaspoon is placed on the right side of the tea saucer.

·          When not in use, the teacup is placed back on the saucer, rather then held. The saucer will be on the table, or in one's lap if there is no table.

·         If having milk in one's tea, pouring either the tea or the milk into the cup first constitutes good manners. As a side note, cream is generally avoided as it can mask the taste of the tea.

·         Sugar cubes may be added to tea with or without milk.

·          When having lemon with tea, delicate lemon slices are generally offered. A small fork is usually provided for adding lemon to tea.

·          Another tip is not to combine lemon with milk in tea, as the lemon juice will cause the milk to curdle.

Tea Party Manners while Eating

·           When seated at the table, the napkin is put on one's lap. The napkin should never touch the table once one is seated. Even if temporarily leaving the table, the napkin is set on the seat.

·          If served scones, split the scone in half horizontally with a knife. Butter is spread on part of one of the scone's crumb sides. This is topped with jam, if desired.

·           Tea sandwiches and treats should be eaten in delicate bites. Remember to smile and chat between bites.

·       Forks should never be set back down on the table. Instead, they are set on the side of the plate.

AWARD
Back to our news,

2009 Syrian Independence Day celebration went well with 40 % of the audience were Australians (2 % of the audience were Australians at the Syrian Annual party end of last year).

The celebration attended by the highest level of Australian politicians in 5 years committee’s events history.

It was a great event to award 4 persons who have done something towards promoting Syria and the Syrian community in Queensland in the past five years.

The event included a display of Syrian items such as photos, tourist booklets, expatriates ministry booklets CDs, Syrian social organizations booklets, Syrian slide show and small display for our Syrian artist Michel Kurche.

There was live music, Dabka dance and of course great food.

Re: Coming Soon

It has been a long time since I posted here last time; I suppose our activities were often the same.

Starting from the second half of 2009, we had something new happened and worth to mention.

First, most of us gathered at two Syrian weddings in Brisbane. It was a chance to brush the dust off our suits as we do not wear them often in Brisbane’s warm weather.

Before the second wedding, October 24th,  we had our Syrian annual party on the third of October. Nothing flash this time other than a three pieces good Arabic music band.

Queensland Friends of Syria had two major activities within two days:

First, a Multicultural Fashion Parade on 12 September.

Later, a presentation about Syria on 14 September on the stage of one of the biggest primary schools in Queensland and in front of around 200 Australian parents.

22 Australian children aged 7-8 wore Syrian cloths with red hats (طربوش ) and sang Doreed Laham ( غوار الطوشه ) song “Fatom Fatom Fatomea” .( فطوم فطوم فطومه ) During the singing they clapped a small pair of wooden bath shoes with their fingers ( قبقاب حمام).

Queensland Friends of Syria held its first Syrian exhibition (Discover Syria) on the first of December which lasted till mid-February, two and a half months at one of Brisbane’s busy shopping centers.

The general public had great chance to catch up with the exhibition due to the timing with Santa Clause and other daily entertaining shows being 15 meters away from the Syrian exhibition.

At the end of the exhibition the Friends of Syria group received a letter of thanks from the Brisbane City Council.

Just before the end of 2009, the Syrian Association received the 2009 Logan Ethnic Organization Award in Business development in Logan City. Perhaps many active Syrians have successful businesses in Logan city south of Brisbane city.

To be continued

AUSTRALIA

Back to our news for the first half of 2010.

We resumed the Syrian house on Sunday 8 February, one Sunday a month; we began with a greater Syrian participation this year than ever before.

Friends of Syria Exhibition (Discover Syria) ended on 15 February.

Our celebration for Independence Day (عيد الجلاء) took place on Sunday 12 April 2010 at noon time with a B.B.Q attended by large Syrian number.

Friends of Syria planned a surprise for the Syrian community at Syrian house on 9 May 2010 by celebrating Mothers’ Day with dance, music and words of appreciation.

Currently the Friends of Syria group is seeking separate registration as an organisation to hold its own events.

The group now is heading to its first annual party on Saturday night, 20 or 27 June 2010.

God protect Syria
