Writer/Source: Sana (22/2/2011)
saxophonist Bassel Rajjoub performed a selection of pieces from his first album "Khameer" in addition to a number of pieces from Turkish Folklore at the Damascus Opera House, accompanied by the Lebanese band "Funjan Shai."
Rajjoub's jazz music often begins with a sax solo, followed by a gradual infusion of percussions, piano and bass guitar that accompany the sax to reach a crescendo before concluding with another sax solo.
Rajjoub draws inspiration from various Balkan music genres along with Turkish, Armenian and oriental music, combining these styles with considerable skill.
Funjan Shai consists of Tarek Yamani (piano), Jean Madani (bass guitar), Fouad Afra (drums) and Khaled Yassin (percussion).
Bassel Rajjoub began his musical career by recomposing folk music in songs performed by Syrian singer Lena Chamamyan. He also performed alongside Chamamyan and other Syrian and Lebanese jazz bands, including Ziad Rahbani's band.
