350 km north of Damascus, Aleppo is the northern commercial capital of Syria. The area was first settled in the 8000 BC and turned into a prosperous city by the third millennium BC. Most of the remains in the old city date to the Byzantine, Hamdanids, Ayyubid, Mamelukes and Ottoman periods
